Kay Rial Bates
Kay started working part-time for the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce in 1991 and became its President in 2003. After graduating from University of Iowa with a double major in human resources and marketing, Kay held jobs in public relations, marketing, banking, sales and a brief stint as a large box store manager.
“This is by far my favorite position, as it allows me to interact with professionals at all levels. In addition, every day is different,” says Kay. “One day I might be selling tickets for a national music act and the next I might be planning an original networking event. I love the constant change and thrive on stress, so this position fits me like a glove.”
Kay is a mother to three children—Amy, Paul and Jim—who are all successful graduates from the McHenry school system and grandmother of two. Amy is a Senior Underwriter with Nationwide Insurance; Paul is a Senior Financial Auditor overseas with Douwe Egberts; and Jim is a Claims Adjuster with Farmers Insurance.
A little known fact about Kay is that she loves old movies from the silver screen era. She also is a Disney nut and “can’t get enough of the mouse.”
Favorite Quote: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
These words are attributed to the wisest man who ever lived, King Solomon, and very aptly applies to how people grow through involvement in the McHenry Area Chamber of Commerce.
Molly has over 15 years of event planning experience, both professional and volunteer. She has organized several large-scale events and numerous small events, including planning the logistics, coordinating staff and volunteers, and marketing the events. She received a B.A. in Public Communication and Human Relations and an M.S. in Event Planning and Management, both from Western Illinois University.
“I love event planning, from the big picture brainstorming to the finishing details that turn an event into an experience. Working with other Chamber staff and volunteers to make that happen is a win-win. Members get to show off their talents and skills, as well as network with peers and potential clients, and the community gets an incredible event.”
Molly’s husband, Mark, is a Crystal Lake native. They live in Crystal Lake with their four children, Jack, Madeline, Luke, and Emma. They love spending time together, whether it’s biking the Prairie Trail, shopping at antique stores, going to zoos and museums, or just having a movie night at home.

Frank was appointed Postmaster of the McHenry Post Office in 1996 and moved with his family to McHenry in 1998. He became involved with the Chamber through the Post Office. He saw the Chamber as a great resource for local business of all sizes. When he started his own part-time business in 2009, he immediately looked to the Chamber to help grow his business. The growth of his own business allowed him to retire early from the Postal Service in 2012. Frank became more involved with the McHenry Chamber after his retirement and refined his networking skills. What he discovered was the more he networked and helped others, the more his business grew. Networking became part of the business. When the position as membership director opened in December 2015, it was a natural fit.
Frank understands the value of networking and brings his passion for helping and connecting others to the Chamber every day.
