Our expertise will help show you what to know about working from home!
Our tips for working remotely make the transition smoother and the experience more enjoyable. Take a look!
1. Find a Work Space That Works for You
Where will you physically work inside your home? It’s a big decision to make. A lot of that might depend on the equipment you need. But, if you have a choice, find a space that works for you.
You’re going to want to be comfortable wherever you work. Tailor it to your tastes. Are you someone that needs background noise? Or maybe you prefer a quieter location. One of the benefits of working from home is that you get to choose.
Experiment a little as well. It doesn’t hurt to try several locations in your house. The important part is that you’re comfortable.
2. Eliminate Obvious Distractions
Once you have a dedicated workspace, make sure that’s exactly what it is. It is an area for you to work. Even though you are at home, you’re not – you’re at work.
Distractions are more likely to occur at your home than an office or physical location. Distractions can be:
- Other people in the house
- Social media
- Household chores
- Cell phones
- Emails
Before you get started, we recommend listing all the possible distractions and how to prevent them. Here’s how you can prevent some of the distractions:
- Make sure everyone in the house knows not to disturb you at your workspace
- Set your browser to block any social media sites while working
- Put your phone on silent and in another room
- Schedule time to check your emails
Pointing out these distractions goes a long way in preventing them from occurring throughout your day.
3. Get into the Office Mindset
Adjusting to working remotely means switching from an at-home mentality to a work-mode mindset.
An easy way to switch into work-mode is by dressing for work. How do you normally dress when you go into work? Dressing for work indicates to your brain that it’s time for work.
Don’t initially give into the temptation to only where pajamas. Once you’ve gotten comfortable working from home, you can make that decision. But dressing for work boosts your productivity and helps make the transition easier.
4. Communicate with Other People
In order to cut down on the feeling of isolation, we recommend scheduling time to speak with other people. If you’re an employer, schedule time to check-in with your employees daily. You can also schedule time to talk with co-workers as well. That can be through video chat, instant messaging, phone calls and many other ways.
At Frontier Marketing, we schedule daily check-ins, along with weekly and monthly meetings. These meetings range from one-on-one to the entire team. It’s a great way to stay connected while also working remotely.
5. Stick to a Normal Routine
Going to work in a new environment can be difficult. Even more when your new place is at home. If you have a normal routine that you do every day, stick to it.
A normal routine includes how you start your day, what you do at work, and what you do after work. This bit of normalcy helps keep you grounded. It also creates a boundary that separates work from home. Your routine gives you a way to get away from work and just be at home.
6. Take Advantage of Breaks
A regularly scheduled break can do a world of good for you. It’s easy to get lost in your work, especially without other co-workers talking to you. And it’s even easier when you’re just at home, in a very familiar place.
Our team schedules breaks into our days. Some of us use alarms to tell us when to take a break. Others have it written into our calendars. On our breaks, we make sure to leave our workspace. Taking a moment and stepping back from the work itself clears your head and can re-energize you.
7. Come Up with a Daily Game Plan
Working from home gives you a lot of freedom. Too much, though, can be overwhelming. In fact, it can be hard to know where to start.
We recommend making a work from home schedule. Frontier Marketing’s team uses a daily calendar and weekly agenda to keep us focused. We prioritize each project based on timeliness and work from there.
Organizing a work from home schedule not only focuses you, it gives you goals. There’s no better feeling than crossing something off a list. Starting your day out with a list of goals and ending the day with a list of accomplishments is very satisfying.
8. Use Reliable Tech
Are you using your personal computer or a company-provided one? Either way, you might not have the tech support you would at a physical location. Before you get started, make sure your computer can handle the workload from a remote location.
You can also test your internet speed to make sure it’s where it needs to be. Find out from your employer what kind of streaming or Wi-Fi capabilities you’re going to need while at home.
9. Practice Self-Care
Making the transition to working at home can be a shock. It can take a few days to get used to and will feel weird. It can also be frustrating and overwhelming.
But you need to take care of yourself as well. Taking regularly scheduled breaks and setting boundaries help. Another way is to take stock of what you can and cannot accomplish from home. Tell your employers and employees about it and make sure they understand.
It’s going to take a bit to get used to. But it can be so much more enjoyable if you’re in the right mindset for it.
